Considering a VBAC in Bristol? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’ve had a previous caesarean and are now pregnant, you may be wondering whether a Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC) is possible for you. As Bristol-based doulas, we’ve supported many families on this path and know just how important it is to have the right information, environment, and support team around you.

VBAC in Bristol – Your Options

In the Bristol area, you have several options when planning a VBAC:

VBAC at Home
Yes, home birth after caesarean is possible! With the right support from the team you assemble, home can be a safe and empowering place to birth. Many families choose this option because it offers familiarity, comfort, and a sense of control. Not all NHS trusts actively promote home VBAC, but it is your right to explore this choice and to ask for a home birth team to support you.

VBAC in Hospital
Both of Bristol’s main hospitals – Southmead Hospital and St Michael’s Hospital – offer VBAC care. However, families we’ve supported often report that Southmead is more consistent and supportive when it comes to VBAC pathways. Their teams are generally experienced and positive about VBAC, whereas at St Michael’s, policies and individual staff approaches can feel more restrictive.

Of course, experiences vary, and much depends on the specific team on the day. But knowing the differences can help you prepare for conversations with your care providers and decide which setting feels right for you.

Alongside Doula Support
Wherever you plan to birth, having a doula by your side can make a big difference. We offer evidence-based information, emotional support, and continuity of care to help you feel confident, calm, and respected in your choices.

Why VBAC Support Matters

Planning a VBAC often comes with mixed feelings – excitement, but also anxieties and sometimes pressure from healthcare systems or family. Having the right support can mean the difference between feeling like your birth is happening to you versus feeling like you are the one steering the journey.

That’s where we step in – not to make decisions for you, but to walk alongside you, helping you navigate information, trust your instincts, and advocate for your wishes.
